Music Curriculum Intent Statement
Music is a universal language that embodies one of the most expressive forms of creativity. A high-quality music education should engage and inspire pupils to develop a love of music and their talents as musicians, and so increase their self-confidence, creativity and sense of achievement. As pupils progress, they should develop a critical engagement with music, allowing them to compose and perform.
Children will develop a greater understanding of music through studying the history of celebrated artists who influenced and inspired people through their work and exploring the origins of different genres of music and their impact on the modern world.
In school, we will, through the effective teaching and learning of the knowledge, skills and understanding in music, maintain and stimulate pupil curiosity, interest and enjoyment. We aim to provide pupils with knowledge of notation and rhythm of which they can build on in later life.
We will teach towards the National Curriculum requirements for music along with ‘Kapow’ and peripatetic teaching. We will, wherever possible, make meaningful links with the other subjects of the curriculum through our creative curriculum approach.
We will encourage the celebration of music through providing extra curricular activities, for example mass choirs, ukuleles, steel pans and violins, exposing them to new experiences and giving them the opportunity to further develop their interests as musicians.
We aim to develop a passion and appreciation of music, to create a community, provide a sense of enjoyment and a lifelong love of music.
